There was no Akwa Ibom kingdom sitting in the file, waiting for a new name. Before the British drew Enyong Division in 1904 — headquarters at Ikot Ekpene — Annang, Ibibio, Oron, Eket, Ibeno and their neighbours ran their own houses. The Efik on the Cross River had met European trade centuries earlier; Scottish missionaries were in Calabar by 1848. The mainland that is now this state came under firm colonial control later, and only then were these groups told they were one administrative sentence.
Related is the honest word. Homogeneous is the brochure. Ibibio is the largest language. Annang is close enough that a visitor collapses them and a household does not. Oron is its own, with five local government areas. Ibeno and Eket sit on the ocean; some communities along that board will tell you they are Ijaw. English is official. The rest is Ibibio, Annang, Oron, Ekid, Andoni, and the dialects that make a market argument possible and a proverb land.
What is shared is habit, not a single ancestor. The soups — Afang, Edikan Ikong, Atama, Afia Efere Ebot — and Ekpang Nkukwo, which people who have left still use as a test of whether a cook is serious. The plays: Ekpo, Abang, Ebre, and the ones a tourist poster never learned to spell. The greeting of an elder. The long road of introduction and Nkong Udok before a marriage is a marriage. Christianity is the public religion; the older shrines have been argued with more than they have been erased. Farming, fishing, trading, raffia, smithing — and the work people left to go and do in Lagos or Houston.
Thirty-one local government areas. Uyo chosen as capital in 1987 so that development would not sit entirely where the road already was. The government page will tell you the people are one stock. Live here, or come back for a funeral, and you will be told which village, which language, which water. That is not a contradiction of the state. It is the state.
